1 Course Content
Starter course
(COMPULSORY)

Mathematics
For ETC Mathematics, we have chosen what we feel are the 30 main topics. As the children work through their course, they will be expected to complete examples and make notes while doing so. Children are expected to spend approximately seven minutes on each topic. For high-achievers who complete their work quickly, we provide an extension section.

English
For English, work is dependent on the particular tests a child is taking. Work includes exercises in spelling, punctuation, comprehension and vocabulary. Children will also work on their creative writing skills including planning, content, paragraphing, punctuation etc. So that they can practise, Verbal Reasoning and Nonverbal Reasoning exercises are set.

Exam Technique
To hone a child’s examination techniques we discuss with him or her the different aspects of preparing for the 11+. We also talk to parents so that they can help their children study by knowing what to work on, the timing of set questions etc.

2 Course Content
Follow on from course 1
(TAKEN ONCE COURSE 1 IS COMPLETE)

Mathematics
To determine which topics children should work on, short maths tests are set each day. Every child will then be provided a personalised plan, which they work on at their own pace, including practise revision questions and useful hints.

English
What children work on will depend on the tests they are due to take. They will then be set work covering comprehension, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary and creative writing including help with planning, content, paragraphing etc.

Verbal and Nonverbal Reasoning
Different exercises are provided for the children to practise. Help is given to improve concentration, timing and how best to tackle difficult questions.

Exam Technique
To prepare children for the 11+ examinations we talk to them and their parents about the different aspects of preparing for the tests. We advise on study hints and encourage children and parents to make a study schedule together.

3 Course Content
How to study
(TAKEN ONCE COURSE 1 and 2 ARE COMPLETE)

For children who have already completed two courses during the holidays, Course 3 begins with working from past examination papers.

Each child is different and works at his/her own pace – we may stop a child before they have reached the end of a paper to help them or leave them to complete it before going through it with them. By now we have a good understanding of each student’s needs and can cater to them as true individuals.

Although study techniques will have been covered in previous courses, Course 3 concentrates on this aspect of exam preparation putting emphasis on the need to spend more time on topics the child may find difficult and revision.

4 Course Content
Revision of specific topics
(TAKEN ONCE COURSE 1,2 AND 3 ARE COMPLETE)

Mathematics
Course 4 delves into mathematics a bit further and covers 40 key topics. Children will have to recall things they have already learnt and complete examples. Children are expected to spend approximately seven minutes on each topic and for those who work quickly, extension sections are provided.

English
Work is set depending on what tests the child is due to take. Work will then comprise exercises in comprehension, punctuation and vocabulary or creative writing skills including content planning, paragraphing and punctuation.

Verbal and Nonverbal Reasoning
Exercises are given for practice.

Exam Technique
To further prepare children and their parents, we discuss with them the different aspects of planning for the 11+.

5 Course Content
Working with past papers
(TAKEN ONCE COURSE 1,2,3 AND 4 ARE COMPLETE)

For children who are joining us for our fifth summer holiday course, more time is spent working off past exam papers.

Depending on the child’s individual level, we work with them to go over any areas of concern.
