English Reading Help
The main two areas of reading help are comprised of comprehension and vocabulary. These two areas contribute to your child’s overall understanding of the English language. Part of our English evaluations includes a reading age assessment test that measures reading accuracy and ability. These tests tell us whether a child’s current reading skills are in sync with their age. Their comprehension (the understanding and processing of a piece of text) is developed through setting your child a series of texts at the national curriculum level he/she is currently working on. This is indicated by ACTION. As your child develops a capacity to understand and answer questions on more difficult texts, the comprehension pieces are adjusted accordingly by our classroom teachers.
Comprehension however goes hand-in-hand with vocabulary, as the ability to pay close attention to a narrative is crucial to the understanding of a text. To help develop this, we ensure that children explore a wider variety of words and writing styles with our set texts. This helps children understand different literal and textual contexts.
Children looking towards taking their 11 Plus examinations also benefit from this type of work. With work that is targeted and set to your child’s capacity, we are able to ensure that they progress in confidence as well as knowledge.
For older students preparing for GCSE English textual understanding is a crucial part of literature texts and critical essays. Our GCSE students practice closely with the texts they are to be dealing with in their exams and coursework. GCSE assessments consist of a recent past English exam paper from the same exam board as the one the school is working with. Another aspect of reading help is to develop different ways to interpret and manipulate exam questions.
