Job Descriptions

Job Title: Extra Tuition LSA (Learning Support Assistant)

Reporting To: Director, Extra Tuition Centre

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

The skills we want you to have, or to develop whilst you are with us are the same skills we want all our staff to have. These have been outlined in the Assistants’ Handbook. It is important that you read this together with the LSA and Teacher Trainee Handbook.

From your point of view the following skills are especially important:
1) Punctuality and Reliability
2) Moving and Marking
3) Pacing the Lesson.
4) Getting the student started
5) Setting goals for the student.
6) Recapping and recalling.

BUT IN ADDITION we would like you to play a more sophisticated role than the assistant in:
1) Talking to parents.
2) Administering and scoring tests.
3) Developing inexperienced Assistants.
4) Administrative chores and teacher support.

Role at the Centre
The teacher in charge of the centre has many duties. These include supervising, training and developing Assistants who are normally sixth formers, training and developing LSA’s and Teacher Trainees, supervising children, keeping registers, talking to parents, administering tests and so on. Your role, in addition to supervising children whilst they work, is to support and take over as many of these duties as you can from the teacher to allow the teacher to focus on other responsibilities.

WE would like you to talk to parents about the progress the child is making. We want you to learn how to administer and mark tests, we want you to help to develop skills in Assistants and we want you to be able to keep an accurate register and receipt any cash the centre may receive. We expect you to arrive a few minutes early to help set up ready for lessons and we expect you to stay at the end to debrief the teacher on what you have done during the lesson whilst you clear up.

In brief, we want you to be the chief support for the teacher in the centre.

Many of you have already developed enormous skills and are quite capable of running a centre on your own. The only thing missing is the professional piece of paper that covers us in the event of a serious problem. We see you as “teachers” in all but name and experience and would like you to play a full and dynamic role in the centre, taking over as much responsibility as possible for the teacher and using your initiative to step into gaps when the teacher is preoccupied elsewhere.
