Investors in People Award Press Release
WELL KNOWN KENT TUITION CENTRE GETS “INVESTORS
IN PEOPLE” AWARD.
A long established Gravesend business, The Extra Tuition Centre, has
been awarded the prestigious “Investor in People” award.
The Extra Tuition Centre has been operating for twenty years in South
East London and Kent. Its Head Office is in Gravesend but it operates
over thirty tuition centres at Leisure Centres throughout Kent.
Many of its former students have gone on to achieve enormous academic
success either at 11+ or GCSE and Angie Jackson is one of those who
started as a student at the Extra Tuition Centre. She then went on
to become an assistant at many of our centres. She says, “I
was lacking in confidence at school and underachieving. I started
going to classes at the Extra Tuition Centre at the end of Year Ten.
I didn’t think I had any chance of passing my GCSE’s but
the extra classes helped consolidate what I was learning at school.”
The centre runs on the basis of encouragement and positive reinforcement.
Angie says, “My self-confidence increased amazingly. I went
on to pass my GCSE’s. I am currently studying for my second
year of AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) exams at night
school which the Extra Tuition Centre are helping me to gain.”
Angie now works in the Extra Tuition Head Office dealing with all
the accounts. She decided on this career because of the experience
she gained as an assistant working for the Extra Tuition Centre. She
admits, “ I get enormous job satisfaction out of watching students
develop academically and knowing that I played a part in helping them
to achieve their potential.
The Investors in People award is based on four key principles for
people development: commitment to develop employees to achieve business
goals and targets; planning to review training and development needs
required in context of the business; action to assure relevant steps
are taken to meet training and development needs; and evaluation to
measure outcomes of training and development for individuals and the
organization.
Mr. Shaun Drury, the senior partner in the Extra Tuition Centre says,
“We have always been committed to training and developing our
students. It seemed a logical step to extend this to our own staff.
We had huge logistical problems to solve. Our thirty centres are scattered
from Woolwich to Tunbridge Wells and employ qualified teachers to
teach after school hours. They are all part-timers but their commitment
has been shown by achieving this award and we are very proud of them.”
Achievement of the required standard will mean that The Extra Tuition
has the structure and correct business practice to allow it to expand
the number of centres it runs in Kent. It also runs a number of intensive
courses during the Summer Holidays, which cover all age ranges from
7 to 16 year olds. Children find these extremely helpful as they are
in blocks rather than just an hour a week.
“Parents
are justifiably keen to get the best they can for their children,”
said Mr. Drury. “Extra Tuition is not just for children experiencing
difficulty. It is also important to increase confidence and hone exam
technique with the brightest of children. We see ourselves as consolidating
and complimenting the work done at school in a relaxed and friendly
atmosphere. We operate out of leisure centres because our tuition
is a pleasurable leisure experience for the children. They love to
learn and love to achieve and be successful.”
Ruth Spellman, Chief Executive of Investors in People UK comments,
“Putting people development at the heart of every function is
the most cost effective decision a business can ever make.”
