GCSE English Exam Tips – Katy Lavender
1. Look at the number of marks for the question. Now if you divide that number by two; that is how many points you need to make. You should then explain these points to get the rest of the points.
e.g. Q.1 = 6 marks
* Make 3 points and then explain them in relation to the question.
2. Read the question twice! Throughout your answer, keep referring back to what you were originally asked.
3. When comparing and contrasting, switch from one text to the other comparing and contrasting:
- Humour - Similarities and Differences
- Sarcasm - Form/ Format
- Rhetoric - Use of Graphics
- Statistics - Formal/ Informal Language
- Language Use - Persuasive Techniques
4. Always make you answers as detailed as possible in the time allowed using key words and technical language (e.g. The author uses metaphors to reinforce…)
5. Use relevant quotes, but none of which should exceed two lines!
6. When writing to argue:
– say things in threes (the ‘rule of 3’)
– take into account/ mention opposing arguments and try to provide evidence to contradict them.
– Use rhetorical questions.
– Make up quotes to use in your argument to provide originality.
e.g. Q = Argue that childhood obesity is on the increase.
A = Dr. Patel BSc, an expert on diet in relation to children believes that, ‘a significant rise in childhood obesity is evident because…’
7. Finally, do not panic! Just do your best. Good luck!
