Tutor Role
Centre Tutors
Your duties will include working as a 1:1 tutor or as a small group tutor within the Etc centre. Working at the Etc centre means that you can draw upon a wide range of teaching resources and have the support of assistants. We are open after-school, on Saturdays and during school holidays, so you can decide depending on your availability which sessions you want to work. We do not offer tuition in a child's home. We get a range of children coming to our centres, some are preparing for exams, some are coming to catch up on foundation work, some are working on higher levels than their age group.
Tutors on the Making Good Progress Pilot
Some of our tutors will also have the opportunity to provide 1:1 support in Bexley Schools that are part of the Making Good Progress pilot. This programme provides structured tuition support for pupils that are not progressing as expected in maths or English during Key Stages 2 and 3. As a tutor on this programme, you will meet with the child, its parents and the class teacher to work out an Individual Tutoring Plan, and then provide the child with up to ten hours support over a period of weeks or as a block over the holidays. Finally, you'll meet up again with the child, its parents and class teacher to feedback on progress and make recommendations for the child's future learning strategies.
If you are working at the Etc you'll have the centre's resources available to you. If you are working at one of the Bexley schools then you'll be using one of their classrooms and their teaching resouces.
What You'll Be Teaching
The subjects you'll teach are maths or English, so you'll need subject specific knowledge of the National Curriculum at KS2 and KS3.The aim is to improve a child's skills, motivation and confidence, so you'll be helping a child to get a good understanding of the subject, to be able to plan better, to develop analytical skills and to build a repertoire of self help strategies.
